My brother and I had the franchise on VM warranty repairs from 1955 till they went out of business. During that time we found that the biggest cause for your problem is one of two things. Either the washer and or circular bearing is missing from the centerpost. Maybe both are gone. Second and this I would do immediately is to clean it with a spray degreaser. Old grease can cause a lot of problems. Remember, you can file metal off but you can't put it back.
