Jerry,
         Long time ago we had a Mits with a record problem...If its the
model with the board across the top, we removed the brown glue and problem
solved..We found by heating the board in the glue area.. If I recall it had
erratic bands only in record.. Pre recorded tapes played fine..
Maybe this will help...
