Actually, the original was probably a 2SD1879. Good advice to upgrade to the 2SD1881. Also, there was a service bulletin on the VA and VM chassis to solder a 33 ohm 1/4w resistor across the B & E of the replacement transistor. That transistor's Wattage rating is 120W compared to 50W on the 2sc4927 So....slap in a 2sd1881 after you check it with a light bulb, lay your scope probe on the iron core of the IHVT, set your scope to it's lowest or 2nd lowest setting and horiz freq rate and fire it up....it may pop it, but the pulse's waveshape will let you know if the IHVT is good or bad. I ass-u-me you don't have a ringer, and don't ring IHVTs with your own personally-built oscillator. .
