The player would have to have dual layer capability because the laser has to
shift its focus to read them. I dont know how they are actually doing that
but back when they were just talking about it, they were proposing a
solenoid to shift the focus or just two different lasers. About 3 years ago
IBM demonstrated a 12 layer DVD.
I checked with the experts at WalMart as to wheather their $34.95 player
would play +R or -R or both and got an equal number of yes or nos. I have a
2 year old Emerson (Funai, Symphonic, Sylvania) DVD/VCR that was gifted to
me because it was 4 months old and off labor warranty and had power supply
damage. I repaired that and made a MPEG4 SP DVD-R disc and it played it. The
owners manual does not mention DVD-R or DVD+R. It does say not to attempt to
play certain types ot a "malfunction" will occur. I recall seeing some posts
about players locking up and refusing to eject with certain discs. Maybe
that is the "malfunction" they are warning about.
