[TechAssist] JVC GR-SXM915u shutdown after loading

Hello all,
This camera stays on in vcr mode until a tape is put in.
The deck does a full and correct load, drum is running,etc.
As soon as the guides fully lock into place , the unit goes into an abrupt
shutdown- no error codes are shown.
Anyone seen this fail mode?
The only thing I can think of is the drum servo may not be locking, but that's
just a guess...
