[TechAssist] Re: Hypothetical: When NTSC goes, will we have one standard ?

The change of system was pushed by a couple of large equippment
manufacturers with lots of lobbying money. TV stations were strongly
opposed because it is costing them millions of dollars to upgrage their
equippment with no increase in advertising revenue. Quite likely there
will be some small market stations that will fold because they cannot
afford the upgrade.

For a large part the public don't care as long as there is something on
the screen and it talks. A few appreciate the improved quality, and
others get it because they are told it's the thing to do and to impress
their friends. Its kind of like stereo audio, a large percent of people
cannot tell the difference between stereo and a mono signal on two
speakers and cannot hear anything above 8 or 10Khz yet they go buy an
expensive surround audio system.
