[TechAssist] Re: HOT subs in general question

You're right about the BUH517 and those 1700 volts could be
2500 as well, because they die by plain overheat. The 1887 subs
the 517 nicely and lasts so long that I have never had a single return
Besides, it runs cooler. After the ctc185, tce realized they didn't need
such a hi voltage feature, so they changed to C5148 (which by the way
is a perfect sub for the buh517 in the ctc185)

Of course, you have to change the .047 - .056 cap, (final horizontal
stage, do not remember the location number but it is a blue one and
somtimes gets "fat") otherwise your HOT
is very likely to overheat and die sooner or later.. besides that if you
do not change it you'll have a nice trapezoidal picture (most customers
do not notice that!!!)
And do not forget to put some thermal compound on the heatsink, TCE
does not use it on the 517 (??).

What Sony reccomends is using a 4927 instead a 1941
(damper - no damper ) (sorry, my english is not the best,
I was trying to say that)
I agree 100% with you in the subs method, that is what I do with
very good results
There is yet another very promising sub for the 1881, the
2SD2580, which actually has higher dc gain, it seems to
be a new version by Sanyo, maybe it will perform better in
some critical cases, I believe the 2SD2579 is the damperless
version, furthermore, they are not more expensive than the
188* line.
Thanks for reading me, you have a good day
Jorge
