Hi Al,

I have had many floppy disks go bad ("not formatted") for no apparent
reason (no magnets). Sometimes 3 in a row. I was able to get some
working again by degaussing them (no more data of course). Most of
mine are not helped by doing this.

I don't have any problem with static electricity here, floppies were
not near steel or magnets - what's going on?
