It is possible for a CDR disc to go bad. The chemical make-up has a
limited lifespan according to the manufacturers of the discs. Some are
rated for 10 years, some much longer. Of course, these discs haven't
been around long enough for anyone to really be able to tell how well
they will hold up over a number of decades. They do advise to keep the
discs where it is dark, cool, and dry to preserve them as long as
possible. My guess is the discs will last longer than what CD players
will be available. I predict that a chip will eventually hold a number
of gigabytes of data and will replace CDs and DVDs as the standard
storage media.
