Kevin, you should be able to switch off your DSL or cable modem without turning the computer off. Also, some models of routers actually can be set to automatically disconnect from the net on a pre selected time basis, then automatically reconnect when internet usage is required. My Linksys router does this. I have it set for 15 minutes of no internet action, to disconnect me. Then if I click to go to a web site, it will automatically reconnect to the net. This is a quick one or two second step which is hardly noticable to the user. Personally, I think it's best to turn the computer off every night. First, if you are running Win 95, 98, or ME, it is suggested by a very, very knowledgeable person on computers that these operating systems work best if rebooted once per day. Win 2000 and XP don't require this because of their superior architecture. Also, why waste electricity running the computer? The fans will also wear out pre-maturally unless you have the system set to go into a sleep state. Other components will be stressed more if they are more hours. On the other hand, if you plan on replacing your computer once every year, then it probably wouldn't make any difference how many hours the thing runs.
