You know, that faint red line part of the problem bothers me....
I wonder if it's <always present> after the picture goes black, if its a
vertical or horizontal collapse, centered or off to one side.
When it fails, does adjusting the screen control make it brighter or
disappear?

As for screen control adjustment, I adjust it until I see retrace, lower it
until the picture blanks, and then adjust it midway or just a bump higher
than midway.
