Mark,
First things that come to mind is the LED, low output, reel sensor or even end
sensors.
If this has a prism or mirrors, clean those.
When I'm not sure who made a unit, I look at the FCC number, or the numbers
imprinted on the PCB boards. Usually I will be able to determine the
manufacturer
this way.
