I've fixed many without chipper checker. Several years ago I built an
EEPROM programmer that plugs into my serial port. Most any brand that uses
an EEPROM this programmer can read and write the chip but I have to remove
the chip from the chassis to put it into the programmer. The software also
allows me to edit the EEPROM data. For RCAs and GE it just so happens if
you load chipper checker software, there is a directory that has all the
init files. They are human readable and contain the address and values to
plug into an EEPROM to re-initialize it. I can take a corrupt EEPROM -
manually reinitialize it and keep the tuner data intact.
If I have a convergence module to replace, I can pull the old chip, read
it, replace it and when the new module arrives pull the chip and reprogram
the original data.. Same thing when replacing any module that has an EEPROM
on it.
