Hi Paul,

Which version of Windows are you running? (very important to post
this). One thing that will work in any version is Add/Remove Hardware.
Try to get it to detect and install your CDROM.

If the CDROM was listed in the Device Manager then you could simply
uninstall it and reboot (this works sometimes).

In Windows 98 there is a trick that really helps. XP has System
Restore, and then there's the Repair Install of Windows (Upgrade
Install)
