Paul,
Unless someone changed the default setting, your Windows keeps a copy of the
registry settings for five
days.
Restart, press F8 to get to a DOS menu.
Choose C:\ Prompt/
Type 'scanreg' (w/o the quotes)
Menu pops up, choose to scan, if says no errors, choose to view back ups.
Choose a backup with a date before the problem started.
Hopefully it takes and tells you to restart.
The CD-ROM on your desktop is only a shortcut, which is why it was still there.
You need to check the properties of your CD-ROM drive in My Computer, or
control panel.

Barry, nothing in the control panel, the system or device manager shows that
there is a CD-Rom. Have
checked drives and everywhere I can think of. One bit of information that I
should have included. My
desktop still shows the cd-rom icon. When I click on that it says D:\ folder
has been moved or removed.

Can' t un-install because there is nothing to un-install. CD-Rom is running
when a disc is put in.I do not have the installation disc. But it probably
wouldn't install it anyway. It was working fine until I tried to run
automan. Had problems and have not been able to use CD-Rom since. Had a
computer tech try to get automan to run and he removed some things. Don't
know if this caused a problem or not. Any ideas beside buying a new one ?
