[TechAssist] A question about fans and switches

Here is a question for a slow Saturday afternoon: Why do all consumer
fans have a 4-position switch that starts off with OFF, and then HIGH,
MEDIUM, and LOW? I would have thought the order would have been off,
low, medium, and high. An automatic transmission in a car doesn't start
in high, it starts in low. Just wondering.
