Bill,
I had a couple of sets that had your problem and found that it was the
clients remote control that caused it.(some foreign substance like a sugary
drink coated the keypad and the board) Just jarring the remote it would make
contact ,and in my case, made the volume go down.
  I also thought it would be the switch at first, but if enough leakage
developed to turn up the volume constantly wouldn't that make the other
switches inoperable?
