It will be after the ship date. We don't expect to have a fully functioning 
robot before the ship date. The second robot will be the star of the open house.

Rockford Robotics Build Season
Week 5 Update
It's crunch time for Rockford Robotics. The systems-electrical subteam finished 
assembly of one electronics box and mounted it on a chassis. They are now busy 
building another electronics box for our second drive train.

Software design is complete. We are now writing programs to operate robot 
components.

Construction of both drive trains and the ball pick-up system is complete.

The ball accelerator  sub-team had to rethink their design. As a result of the 
precision required by original accelerator design, they decided to construct a 
simpler system.

We may have been a bit ambitious with our plans to build two robots. Our new 
plan is to build only one ball collection and accelerator system which can be 
easily swapped between drive trains.

By the end of next week, the team plans to have a fully functioning robot and 
be practicing our driving skills.


In the pictures below, Eli and Jared are constructing the ball pick-up system, 
Morgan is cutting parts for the ball accelerator, students are assembling the 
ball shooter, and the programming team is writing code.

Chassis/Drive Train Sub-team

The chassis/drive train team learned that you can't anticipate everything in 
your CAD design. Even though the chassis was constructed as designed, there 
were construction challenges.  Two frame supports were removed due to alignment 
of the gear boxes.



The strategy of making two robots this year will allow us to test different 
wheels.  Pneumatic wheels were installed on one drive train and regular wheels 
on the other.  We will have to determine which provides better locomotion while 
keeping in mind the how much weight the different wheels add to the robot.

Animation Team



The animation team continues to work on their video contest entry. They spent 
most of this week further refining the characters and background that will 
appear in their contest entry. Below are some examples of their work.

Congratulations to the winners of our driver contest. Jared and Tommy will be 
manning the controls at the competition.

Our driver alternates are Isaac and John.

The drive team includes a human player who operates the Kinect motion sensing 
system during the autonomous mode, returns balls to the court, and shoot 
basketballs across the court during the final thirty seconds of the game. Team 
leaders are still working on a rubric for choosing this player.
