[TCUG] Bus gates at pelicans

Has anyone out there in TCUG land had any experience with providing a bus
gate at a pelican crossing?  We are putting a bus lane in along a main road
between a park and ride site and a gyratory at the edge of the City.  Due to
political pressure we don't want to put another set of signals in on this
corridor but want to provide some gating facility to give bus priority on
the lead up to the gyratory.  

There is a pelican crossing on the approach which would provide an
opportunity to put in a bus gate, but there are a lot of concerns about
pedestrian safety.  For example the  pelican could have a red man showing
and stationary traffic leading a pedestrian to think it is safe to cross who
then walks into a bus lane which is showing green to buses. 

Can anyone offer any experience on bus gates?
