I've posted a link to TFL guidance on this (Amongst other things "good old free
lists" tends to garble www addresses!)

Although we have several arrangements like this I don't feel that any of them
give a totally satisfactory solution. In respect of your specific questions ...
1. we have found that an offset of about 3m with the bus lane in front of the
main traffic lane allows the nearside primary for all traffic to mask the
secondary to the bus lane to remove any see-through problem.
2. detectors sited as far away from the stopline as practically possible. We
use 13 seconds travel time for a local hurry call and 15 seconds for UTC
control (to allow for propagation delays) with most junctions (depends on
intergreens of course). These only demand the hurry call not the stage -
conventional detection nearer the stopline is used by taxis and cycles.
3. We don't use SVD but we are currently working on using our RTI system (Init)
to provide virtual loops although none up and running yet. Unless you regularly
have several buses in line astern we have found that a cancel loop on the exit
of the bus signals gives a more responsive operation than a fixed length hurry
call stage. This might also be useful if traffic queues back from the island as
it will hold the bus lane on green until the bus has joined the queue
successfully.

Subject: [TCUG] Bus Pre- Signals Design Help!
Need to provide a design for Bus Pre-Signals where the single bus lane approach
will be signalled as well as the 2 lane vehicle approach. The bus lane and
vehicle lanes will be separated by an island. The 3 lane approach merges to 2
lanes at the pre-signals so the bus will emerge into the nearside traffic lane.
The pre-signals will be in advance, approx 40m to the approach to a
roundabout. Due to the possible speeds and merging requirements on the approach
i have discounted the bus operating on a give way.
Does anyone out there have any drawings they could provide of scheme that they
may have that would assist me determine an optimal solution with regard to
* splitter island length and any offset of stoplines
* positioning of loops for detection of vehicles
* has anyone has any success with using selective vehicle detection loops
to hurry call bus phase. Bus lane will be shared with cyclist and taxis. I may
end up resorting to attempting to use our ACIS system to insert hurry call on
basis of virtual loop.
Any assistance would be appreciated as I am on an extremely tight deadline and
don't have time to re-invent the wheel. This is why I am also using good old
free lists as it gets the question to the masses quickly.
