That's exactly how I would explain and and how I get the studs out as well. In
a pinch I have used Vice Grips.

Tighten them together. Screw out the inner nut. Will remove a stud everytime.
Mark or Will may have a better way to explain to a VW nut how to use the jam
nut method to remove a stud. I just thought every VW nut knew how to use nuts
for studs. Or is that a VW stud using nuts. Anyway, you get the meaning.
