i remember seeing that one too...but i have dug through the last two years worth of magazines and can't seem to find it.

There was an issue of Hot VW that addressed your concerns. It was in the last 1-2 years I think, but they basically put some heat shields made out of sheet metal and clamped to the J tubes with band clamps. They said it lowered the head temps by diverting the heat out and away from the heads. If I can find it I'll let you know what issue or scan it and email it to you.
