The best friend of old VWs cruising is a cell phone and AAA.  I would get AAA
with a minimum of 100 miles towing distance.  Don't quote me, but I think it is
around $150 per year.  Also, before I go on a cross country in a VW I look up
all the VW shops I can find along the route as well as review the AIRS web site
for VW people along the route.  It is also good to carry the "normal" spare
parts you might need for a simple break down.   Lots of info on theSamba.com
regarding cross country tours in a VW.

Everyone seems to always need a tow. Julie, Paul etc.......

So I bought a 1985 Vanagon, and gonna do its first test drive tonight. In June
heading all the way from Abilene, Tx to Fargo, ND. Everyone seems to always
need
a tow. -So should I get Triple A, my insurance doesn't cover tows/roadside
assistance since its so old. Is that what ya'll suggest??, my Mom is really
nervous for me to head up, plus we will have our 3kids with us.

Waiting for a tow to a mechanic.  That damned gremlin is sitting here chewing
on
chocolate cake and swigging beer and laughing at me.
