What a maroon! You trusted a part on an old VW to be exact? The guage on my 68 Ghia literally swings back and forth from empty to full as I drive it. As for telling anybody that you are absolutely sure about anything on these cars, you are just asking for abuse.

hey we won't talk about running out of gas. i drove out to the inlaws with my wife to get a ficus tree and on the way back i get about a mile away from there house and she just died and the gas gauge showed i had a good 1/8 tank of gas. so i call for assistance my father inlaw used to be a squareback enthusiast. he said is it out of gas i said no i think the filter is clogged because it shows i have an 1/8 of a tank. he says are you sure and cocky me says oh yea that gauge is right on. it has 1/8 of a tank in it. he says ok so he shows up with some tools and some gas just in case. i take the line off the fuel pump and blow into the tank and nothing. i shake the bus and here nothing so the inlaws both bust out laughing at me and i haven't heard the end of it yet.

my friend jason says your not a vw enthusiast untill you run out of gas somewhere. it has happened to him twice. me now once. embarassing yes. will it happen again probably but i am never letting it fall below a quarter again.

Paul:
You got one of those type II's before fuel gauges, right? Well they are supposed to have a reserve tap. I am in the process of "doing" my 60 panel van. Spent a total of about 10 hours of labor and part searching to get the reserve tap to work. One, you gotta have the reserve tap for the type II. Similar to the bug but not exactly. They are available from places such as Wolfsburg West. Then had to have the little lever that mounts on the side of the tap. Spent about 2 hours at Oakhill's salvage yard removing one from an old panel van buried down in the sand with no wheels. Watching all the time for snakes. Spent another 3-4 hours trying to get the cable pull to work in my panel. This thing runs from the cab all the way back to the tank. 45 years of rust accumulation. With lots of penetrating oil and perseverance I finally managed to get the wire out. Another hour of polishing the wire, lubricating it etc. got it back in and all hooked up. It works. Was it worth all of the effort. I don't know, but hopefully I won't run out of fuel 10 miles from home. By the way. In type II's without a fuel gauge: I always carry a spare can of gas.
