The VDub video reminded me of 2 bugs I owned in my youth.

One was a purple, 1961 bug that did not have a starter, 1st gear, 2nd gear, reverse or clutch. Fortunately, I lived in hilly Pittsburgh, PA and could just catch it gear with the right timing. It was a bitch if someone parked too close to me on a hill, though. It could take 2 or 3 times to wedge the bug outta the parking spot. Winter was tougher too because the hill had better not have ice on it. Otherwise I couldn't get enough traction to catch it in gear. Amazing how long you can drive a car timing your shifting with only 3rd and 4th gears. ;) I had it about 8 months until I sold it for some some dope. Er, to some dope.

The other bug was a powder blue, 1967 ragtop. The wooden beam of the front top cloth was termite ridden and it would not latch. It was a bitch cruising in the snowy, freezing cold of the NE that winter. I hand carved a replacement in the spring. It broke down on a roadtrip to FL the next winter and I left it at a gas station in Columbus, OH. Could still be sitting there today.
