use heat on the housing.  Not much.  You can also use a penetrating oil like
pbblaster.

Insofar as other options..

Take a bug swing axle tranny, one preferably with a taller freeway flyer
fourth gear.  Flip the Ring gear and pinion to the right side of the
transaxle.  This isn't hard but you do need to make sure that you have
proper backlash needing a dial indicator.  Use the nosecone and hockey stick
from your old transaxle and mount the drive axles and redux boxes to it.

Sorry to hear that you're having problems but this is why I'm shying away
from daily VW aircooled drivers.  It's getting harder to find parts and good
people to do the work.  That and being on the road all the time I just want
to be able to enjoy them, not fix them all the time.
