[tcb] Re: Electronic Ignition

These symptoms sound just like my issue last year going to T@P. I did
everything you could imagine and limped back home. I then pulled out my pict 34
and took out the Pilot jet , got a mirror tapped the jet on the mirror and wow
a little black spec came out - that was it. Never had anymore problems. (Even
pumping air into the jet did not help until I tapped the booger on the mirror).
There is a whole thread about this on the Samba. (The evil Pilot jet )

If I'm not mistaken that is what prompted Mike to sell that bus.

Ooooo, I had not heard that about Everett’s bus. That may be the most evil
mechanical hard to find thing ever. In a past Bulli Gras I found him on the
side of the freeway, really pissed off, installing an electrical fuel pump (he
was soooo pissed). Was that the same problem?

Fred any time the coil gets overly hot , it is going to die very soon . coil is
a " coiled wire " that magnifies the spark . It gets hot means a short it will
work several times then burn enough to separate inside then no workie at all if
it is HOT to the touch , more than because the engine is warm . Then Dennis is
correct OR like Mike Everett new gas cap sticker fell into gas tank and floated
over inside gas line He would stop & it floated away AAAAA the beauty of a 44
year old machine terry

Whatever about the fuel, your major clue is the hot coil, IMHO. Should not be
hot if all was well.

1) I can not rule out a fuel problem, after running the bus at idle for over 30
min. I drove to the mail box, 400 yards, on the way back the engine died would
not start and I did notice that the fuel filter was empty, and the coil was
very hot to touch. After sitting dead for about 10 min. the motor starts again
and I get back to my drive way.

2) The bus was running fine, I had driven it 20 to 30 miles away from home
several times but I notice a decrease in power and the idle was very slow.

I decided to change the condenser, (10 years old, now understanding what a
condenser does) and points.

Fred This is late but you know that this is not a fuel problem ???? Terry
sounds like trash in the tank ? .clogged exhaust ? loose wire ?

After the last bout of trouble with the ignition, (I changed the plugs, coil,
points, rotor & cap) the motor runs fine but over time I noticed a reduction in
performance.

I check the points and their a little burnt.

I decided to change the condenser & put in a new set of points.

Changing the condenser is such a pain in the ass.

Finish the work & take a test drive; the motor is running great.

I get a few blocks from the house and the motor dies and will not start.

After some tinkering (not really doing anything) the motor starts up, running
great, I get a few blocks down the street and the motor dies and will not
start.

This is the same crap problem I had before!

I also question the quality of the parts, the part stores around here only
carry Mexican or Chinese components.
