Is it possible to drag the steering box on a Bay? Has anyone ever put wheelie
bars on a steering box?

my good friend patrick will be building me a 4" narrowed adjustable beam. i am
currently about 6" down from stock. the drip rail is at eye level right now, my
goal is to make the fiberglass top at eye level. as far as binding, the
problems i am currently running into is i have such bad caster (i think that's
the word) that my ball joints can't flex anymore so they bind/bottom out when i
hit bigger bumps which is extreemly unsafe, especially when going 70mph down
i30 in downtown little rock during afternoon rush.
to aleiveiate the situation i could:
A. go with drop spindles for the ball joint trailing arms. the drop bj spindles
only lower 2.5" more which means i would never achieve my ultimate goal plus, i
am in need of some ball joints so by the time i bought the drop spindles, and
ball joints and found a place to press them in i'd have $500 easy spent in it
and i would never achieve my goal of getting that top even with my eyes.
B. go with 64-67 king pin spindles. the king pins are 1" lower right off the
bat. my drums and bearings and brake hardware will work on them. you can get
the spindles flipped which will basically give you about 3" of drop and still
be safe. i can turn the beam more for more drop and not have the binding issues
of the ball joints because the joint is a swivel type setup instead of an
actual hinge type setup. and i found a set of king pins and trailing arms that
i could score for trade of my adjustable stock beam.
in the long run i'll have $230 in the beam, and $60 in the spindles to have
them flipped. that's $110 that i'll save and i'll be able to achieve my goal.
the binding issues i keep discussing are at the ball joint. the ball joint can
only bend so much, then it binds up and basically "bottoms out" to much of that
will cause the joint to brake resulting in no more hershey if i'm going at any
sort of faster than walking speed.
tires, currently i'm rocking a 185/60r14 it's about 10%ish off. when i'm going
80mph on the speedo, i am pacing semi's
in order to achieve my goal i will probably have to buy some 165/45r15's (i
think it's a 45) it'll have about an inch sidewall and will be about 4" shorter
than my 185/60r14's.
the only problems i see having in the future are in pulling into and backing
out of my driveway...that is currently a problem, but anywhere else it
shouldn't be a problem.
i've yet to decide on how much more i want to go down on the rear.

On an unrelated note, now narrow are you going with your beam? It seems you are
pretty low already, do you need to be lower? And what binding issues are you
having being that low, and what is it caused from? Last question, what tires
are you running up front, and how has their smaller size effected your speedo?

denis is right, after unbolting my beam the other night my wrench slipped and i
whacked my ring finger, my wedding ring pinched the skin so hard that it caused
a big blood blister instantaneously. and i yelled

seriously, it stands for "We Know Kirk Has A Bus Gang"
and seriously, hershey has no front end and will be getting the narrowed
treatment the first part of december...he'll also be getting 67 spindles that
shall be flipped for three more inches of drop and i won't have to worry about
binding like i do from the ball joint spindles i have.
anyone interested in my ball joint trailing arms and spindles let me know. they
should come with backing plates too.

nope it's based on a phone call where kirk said "i don't have one loose" when i
asked if he had a bus draglink and based on a samba comment i read today on an
older post of kirks where he said "mine" referring to a bay window bus.
not to mention he is on the "Texas Coalition of Busses" which is a members only
elite group of fine bus owners ;)
