thank you for sharing with us Sila, and congratulations of course!

My hope was that these types of posts, describing successes achieved by
people who are blind, will serve as encouragement to those who are still
struggling with employment. It is possible; it can be done!

Hello All,
In playing catch up, I came across Chip's message. Back in the fall I
applied for a job with the Department of Revenue. As many of you know, I
already work for them so already have some Child Support Enforcement
knowledge. Any way, I was granted something called a Skills Verification
Test (SVT.) I was allowed to take the test in my office using my
WindowEyes
screen reader and CCTV. I passed and then was granted an interview. During the interview I had to give a Power Point presentation. That was scary but
I
tell you, I wouldn't give any thing for my braille skills. I made notes
regarding the key points and was able to maintain eye contact or at least
look directly at my audience. Any way, to make a long story short, at the
end of October I received a promotion. DOR has always been above and
beyond
for me but, I know of two others with a visual disability who have applied for jobs in their call center with not much success so it's a mixed bag. I am fortunate to have some sight and I do advocate. However, there's a fine
line between too much and not enough.
Thanks for letting me share. Hope all have a great 2010!
Sila

Subject: [tabi] employment

Hi all,

I've spoken with another TABI member, and she and I think it's a good
idea
if any of us get a new job, or a promotion, or otherwise have any
employment
successes or good news, we'd like to ask each of you to be willing to
mention this on TABI.

We think it would give all of us locally a little boost in our confidence
and morale, and also give us the name of an employer who has shown
they're
willing to give someone who is blind a chance.

so please, if you get any job-related good news, please share it with
everyone here on TABI. if you know of someone else who gets the good
news,
and they aren't on TABI, please ask them if it's ok for you to pass along
their news.

thanks.

Chip
