This isn't the same thing at all (because the I.D. Mate is portible and this
isn't really), but just to help people save some money, you can buy a
barcode omni-directional scanner (which connects to a pc or a braille note
or other note takers) for $150 from A.T. Guys.  You do need an internet
connection to use its lookup feature.

Just thought I'd mention it as the cheapest way for home use to use barcodes
to identify products.
