Government Operations Appropriations Committee Chair Discusses
Dissolution of the Governor's Commission on Disabilities.

Proposal Would Silence the Direct Voice of the Disabled Community in the

Recently, the Florida House of Representatives has been discussing the
dissolution of the Governor's Commission on Disabilities. This
organization provides an invaluable service to the disabled community of
Florida and as a former member of the Commission I have seen first-hand
the amazing results of this group. The commission acts as the voice of
all Floridians with disabilities and for nearly three years has worked
with state agencies and the government to advanced public policy and
voice the unified concerns of this very large, diverse and rapidly
growing community. The commission has never requested state funds other
than operating funds, and yet through their efforts they have improved
and will continue to improve educational and employment opportunities
for people with disabilities. Through the creation of these
opportunities, tens of thousands of individuals will not only require
fewer state services, they will be able to enter the work force and
begin contributing taxes.

As a group made up of nineteen volunteers, all experts in the issues
they are addressing with an understanding of the systems in place, the
commission is able to operate on a level of knowledge and efficiency
which no state agency is prepared to meet, on a very limited budget.
This proposal threatens to silence the voice of the disabled community
in state government and hamstring the State's ability to hear and
address the issues facing this growing demographic.

To address this issue, I will be holding a press conference on
Wednesday, March 24, 2010 @ 10:30 AM on the fourth floor of the Capitol
Rotunda, 400 S. Monroe St. Tallahassee, FL.

I hope this information is helpful to you.
