I'm sorry this has happened to you; yep, it's not fair.

But, I don't want to see any arguments started here about the republican
verses democrat philosophy on dealing with the economy.

Also, I'll point out there are plenty of people on this list who haven't
worked in a long long time, if ever. it helps to keep them in mind, before
you feel the need to vent about a pay cut.

Areas

Hi, yes there is ways to get info out but the thing is there is not a lot of
industry out there surrounding the Tallahassee area especially. But Florida
as a whole is not a industry state. Florida is 50 percent agriculture and
about 30 percent tourism and the other 20 percent is other business and
industry and Government workers. When I say agriculture I don't mean just
growing tomatoes and such this includes lots of stuff that falls under this
heading. So first of all we have to migrate from tourism and agriculture to
small business and industry. As far right now as it is we are in for some
very hard times. Believe me I know they are all ready cutting government
workers and salaries right now in the legislature. If they are doing this
then what do you think they are going to do to other government agencies!
This will also have a trickledown effect to local government employee's. I
myself have received a sizeable pay cut and the payroll lady for the
legislature said there was just stacks of papers for this same reason pay
cuts and layoffs. So You see there is away to go about something first. That
is create the jobs for the people in private sector first by trying to give
the private sector whatever it need to create jobs and to also encourage
them in these new jobs to hire people with disabilities if possible. You
can't just start cutting the core out and not have something to replace it
with. I am very fortunate to be in the drop but not been there long enough
to quick working yet. So now in these terrible times already I have to live
on a income cut of 25 percent. Now if you don't think that hurt! It sure did
not do the economy any good. I was going to try to have a fairly good
Christmas but now I want be spending very little. So you tell me cutting
jobs and pay from the government positions is going to help the economy, I
don't think so. I think they got the cart before the horse. So this is fair
warning to all expect bad things to come. You will see not a growth in
business or industry but the closing down. I know this was long winded and
thanks for letting me vent this out. Just feeling Terrible.

Hi Darla and Lynn,

and of course, if we like an idea, we can always start a letter writing
campaign for it.

we also have members of TCB, NFB, and the Lighthouse here on the list, and
these groups have a lot of contacts; if it's a good idea, it could go a long
way, even if we do have a closed list.

Just as a way of starting a discussion of possible ideas:

I know all of the groups I mentioned have programs where they go out into
the community (usually schools I believe), and educate the populous on what
it's like to be blind.

what about a similar program, of blind adults going to groups such as the
chamber of commerce, or the better business bureau, to talk to them about
what it's like to be a blind employee; what they as employers might expect
in the way of problems, and how those problems are solved. also, what they
may expect in the way of benefits in hiring a disabled employee. it might
be good if several people went as a panel, not just a single individual, so
this large group of business men may talk with secretaries, lawyers,
computer programmers, food service workers, the entire range of jobs held by
blind employees. seeing this group of differing individuals and talents,
well, they may just find it inspiring enough to try a disabled employee of
their own next time? and of course the group could also talk about
successful situations, and problematic ones, and why some problems never
were solved satisfactorily, and what it would have taken to solve them.

I would think, if this is thought to be a good idea, that the groups I
mentioned earlier should have some contacts in the local business groups?
or maybe the local dbs has some contacts?

maybe this is being done already (that just occurred to me)?

This is just meant to be an example of an idea that we might refine here on
the list, and then we could actually work on implementing with the help of
our local groups. It's not really such a limitation that we're a "closed
list" is my point.

Chip

Dear Lynn,

We would, as well, and I understand about the closed nature of our list, but
perhaps, among ourselves, since we are nonpartisan, I hope, on that score,
we can come up with some ideas to help those who are trying to assist us to
sell current employers and the City on ways of being more business-friendly.
