Hi Kim, If you're using JAWS, you can press the insert key along with the number 3 key on the number pad to read whatever is on the status bar. You can also press S to do the same thing. You can go into the options menu and select preferences. There is a status bar tab where you can select to turn on and off the various prompts that might be on the status bar such as sample rate, bitrate, stereo or mono, etc. One of these is current total time which you would obviously leave on.
