Some time ago I played with the MP3 files and I found that VBR greatly
increased the size of the file. Why this should have been so I do not know.

Hi Rob. OK, I feel better now. I can, and likely will, research this just
because I am interested. If I find anything that is reasonable, I will share
it with the list. In the mean time, I will simply do my own custom settings
which is what I have mostly done anyway. I will say though, for others on
the list, this does allow much better quality on low KBPS rates. I am
recording a book for a client and the musical selection at the beginning and
end of the book is mostly very delicate bells. It needs to be at 64 KBPS. In
straight MP3 there are all kinds of artifacts. In MP3 VBR, it sounds very
clear.

Thanks again Rob.

Neal,

In short, I don't know. This is all decided by the LAME encoder, and is
based on the parameters of the file you are encoding, along with the
settings you have selected. Usually one needs to experiment to figure out
exactly what the defaults are doing.

Subject: [studiorecorder] Question about MP3 variable bitrate settings

Hi Rob. If I am saving a .stereo wav file with VBR checked, bit rate 160,
what are the defaults for the following settings?

Sample rate.

Mode. If it's mono, then I assume that is mono, but what about stereo?

Max bit rate I assume would be 160

Quality.

And VBR quality.

Not sure what the difference is in the last two.

I realize I can set these, but it would be nice to know if I have to do this
if it is close to what I would set anyway.

Thanks for answers.

Neal
