Yes, I am using Jaws version 15.
And, I also move with the right and left arrows.
The issue, which I am calling a file scan for lack of anything better
to call it, appears to happen if I accidently press two keys at once,
or very nearly at once, on the number pad.
The real left and right arrow keys work fine, as do alt or control plus
one of the arrows.

That would cause the behavior you describe, in my experience. If using Jaws,
be sure to use f11 and f12 to move backward and forward through a file.

Whenever this happens, the Jaws speech freezes, and I have no control
of the program until it finishes its romp through the entire file. If
that file happens to be a large one, this means that I have to wait
for as much as 2 minutes for things to return to normal.
The only control I have is to silence the playing of those random
phrases by pressing enter or space bar, but the scan continues until
it is done.
I have no idea what I am doing to initiate this behavior.
