SBI?s Information Technology Programme aims at achieving efficiency in operations, meeting customer and market expectations and facing competition. Our achievements are summarized below:

FULL BRANCH COMPUTERISATION (FCBs)

All the 9,038 branches of the Bank are now fully computerised. The task was completed in January 2004.  On 27th January 2004 it was declared by the bank that all the 13,360 branches of State Bank group were computerised.  This strategy has contributed to improvement in customer service.

ATM SERVICES

There are 3,300 ATMs on the ATM Network of State Bank Group. These ATMs are located in 898 centres spread across the length and breadth of the country, thereby creating a truly national network of ATMs with an unparalleled reach. Value added services like ATM locator, payment of fees for college students, multilingual screens, voice over and drawal of cash advance by SBI credit card holders have been introduced.

INTERNET BANKING (INB)

This on-line channel enables customers to access their account information and initiate transactions on a 24x7, boundary less basis. 961 branches, covering 207 centres, are extending INB service to their customers. All functionalities other than Cash and Clearing have been extended to individual retail customers. A separate Internet Banking Module for Corporate customers has been launched and available at 66 branches. Bulk upload of data for Corporate, Inter-branch funds transfer for Retail customers, Electronic Bill Presentment & Payment, SMS Alerts,  E-Poll, IIT GATE Fee Collection, Off-line Customer Registration Process and Railway Ticket Booking are the new features deployed.

SBI CONNECT

The project aims to create a WAN (Wide Area Network) of all the branches and offices of State Bank Group. This project is the largest Networking project in the world which will connect about 14,000 offices and branches. Till date more then 3,000 offices were connected in Metro & Urban Centres and by the end of next year it is expected that more then 5,000 offices will be under this project.

CORE BANKING SOLUTION

The branch computerisation in SBI started in the year 1992 with Bankmaster Software. In Bankmaster software, the database is being kept at local level. Bank has now decided to go for a Centralised Data Base System & Transaction Processing. The software for Core Banking solution has been procured from FNS, Australia. TCS, the vendor for the software was entrusted the task for customisation of the software. The Transaction Processing Software is capable enough to handle transactions in 150 million accounts maintained by us.

The first branch under core banking solution went live on 29th August 2003 at PBB, Hiranandani Branch at Mumbai.  During last few months, several branches were converted into Core Banking Solutions in various parts of the country. It is expected that by June 2004, aggressive rollout plan will be initiated and by the end of this financial year about 3,000 branches in Metro and Urban centres with about total 70% of the bank?s business will be working under Core Banking solution.

Nickname - is the reference name for a biller that you have added (eg Hutch, Home)

Biller Specific Details ?

These are used identify your account with the biller and are mentioned on every paper bill sent to you by the biller. For instance, to add MTNL as a biller the Biller Specific Details that you need to provide are the 'Customer Account Number' and the 'Telephone Number'. Please provide such information accurately so as to facilitate us and the biller to relate to your service correctly. We suggest that you keep a recent bill with you handy when you input the Biller Specific Details. You can also register your billers by downloading the e-PAY form from the site or picking up an e-PAY form at your branch. Fill in the biller details, sign the form and submit the same at your branch.

When will I receive my bill on www.onlinesbi.com after I register? When can I pay?

After you register, it typically takes between 7 days - 20 days to register your request with the biller. For "View and Pay Bill" billers, you would receive an electronic bill on www.onlinesbi.com within 31 days of registration (where the billers generate a monthly bill). The bills will be presented to you from the next billing cycle and you can make payments through e-PAY only against such electronic bills.  For "Pay Bill" and "Payment Only" billers, you can make a payment immediately after you have added the biller online to your biller list.

Can I pay someone else's bill?

Yes, you can pay someone else's bill. To do so you will have to add the Biller Specific Details of the person whose bill is to be paid.

How does a biller know that I am using the Bank's service?

You need to provide your Biller Specific Details while adding a biller. We will verify and confirm the association with the biller so that bills can be presented to you and you can make payments.

What acknowledgement/receipt do I get for a payment made through e-PAY?

For each payment made through e-PAY, you get an instant electronic acknowledgement/receipt that has a Transaction Reference Number. You have the option of printing this receipt for your records.

What is "AutoPay"?

The 'AutoPay' option is a standing instruction that you can set up for a "View and Pay Bill" biller that you have registered for. You can also fix an upper limit for payments. DEMAT : Depository Participant Services

Depository is an organization, which holds your securities in the form of electronic book entries. This will be done at the request of shareholders through the medium of a Depository Participant (DP). If an investor wants the services of a Depository, he has to open an account with the DP. Further, a depository transfers securities as per the investor's instructions without actually handling securities, through the electronic mode. The DP will maintain the account balances of securities bought and sold by the investor from time to time. The DP will also give the investor a statement of holdings, which is similar to a passbook.

Depository Account Opening
An investor needs a satisfactory introduction and identification to open a Demat account with our DP.Every account holder in our Bank can open a Demat account. An investor has to fill up an Account Opening Form and execute an agreement with the DP for opening a Demat account.

Facilities provided by Depository

Account opening

An investor (investors are called Beneficial owners in Depository system) intending to hold securities in the electronic form in the Depository system will have to open an account with a DP of NSDL. The investor has to fill up an account opening form and sign an Agreement. The investor can open multiple accounts with same DP as also with different DPs. The DP will provide the investor a statement of holdings and transactions. In case the shares are held in joint names then the account is to be opened in the same order of names. Separate account needs to be opened for each combination of names.

Dematerialisation/Rematerialisation
Dematerialisation is the process by which an investor gets his physical certificates converted into electronic form and reflected in his account with the DP.

* One has to just fill in Dematerialisation Request Form available with his DP. Submit his share certificates along with the above form (legend like 'Surrendered for Dematerialisation' should be written on the face of each certificate before its submission for Dematerialisation). The beneficial owner's account will be credited with in 15 days and he will be informed by the DP.
* In one whishes to convert his electronic shares back to physical shares at a later stage, he can still do so by applying for rematerialisation through a Rematerialisation Request Form available with his DP. The new rematerialized certificates with new range of certificate number may use existing Folio number or a new folio number for the certificates.

Electronic Trading
Trading in the Depository mode takes place in the following manner:

* If the investor wants to sell his shares, he has to place an order with his broker and give a "Delivery Instruction" to his DP. The DP will debit his account with the number of shares sold by him.
* If one wants to buy shares, he is to inform his broker about his Depository Account Number so that the shares bought by him are credited into his account.
* Payment for the electronic shares bought or sold is to be made in the same way as in the case of physical securities.
* The shares one buys are transferred in his name promptly after he makes the payment.
* No formalities of filling transfer deeds, affixing stamps and applying to the Company for registering the shares in Beneficial owner's name are required to be observed, neither there is any fear of bad delivery.

Corporate Benefits
At the time of distribution of corporate benefits NSDL transmits the data electronically to the ISSUER/R&TA. Monetary benefits like, dividend is mailed directly to the investors by the Issuer. For non-monetary benefits like Bonus, Rights, Conversion, the alteration details are downloaded to NSDL by the Issuer/R&TA. NSDL then downloads this information to the DP and the corresponding beneficiary (i.e., investor) accounts are credited.

Pledging
The securities with the investor can be pledged in favour of a lender for securing a loan. The pledged securities are blocked in favour of the lender, who releases the pledge and get the shares transferred in its name. Freezing/Locking of Investor Accounts An investor can freeze/lock his account for any given period of time if he so desires. During this period no debits can be made to the investors account.

Cost of Trading in the Electronic mode
Each DP charges its client a certain amount of fees. These charges are by way of Account Opening fees, Transaction fees, Custody fees, etc. and the rate of fee is fixed by each DP separately.

Security Aspect
At the time of opening account with DP, one signs an Agreement in which DP indemnifies the investor for any misuse of his holdings. The Depository (i.e., NSDL) will also ensure that the interests of the investor are protected. Every transaction in the account will be authorized by beneficial owner.
