In a single day dev camp i think we can make students understand a little bit about the projects, what we like to maintain, develop and thus make them capable of participating. Fixing an identified bug or adding a new feature to any selected code will give them a little more idea. Otherwise usually hackfests or dev camps follow a structure where a set of problems are identified before hand and solved in the social gathering.
