[SL] Re: "System" menu links do not all work

My problem seems to be solved now!

To be honest, I don't fully understand what was wrong.
But for one part it seems to have been a browser cacheing
problem misleading me.

In the end it turned out that I *did* have this FAQ Apache 2
problem, of which I was sure that it was not it.
So you were right all along, Jim! (Although I had tried this
before, with the effect of making it worse, at first...) ;-)

CONCLUSION

For newbie end-users I have the following two tips, now, if
something in your SL doesn't work as expected.

(1) Be patient. It seems that some functions need some
internal setup or initialisation when they are called the
first time. In the case of the System submenu tree, you
may have to wait several minutes before you see a result.
Subsequent calls work instantaneous.

(2) Reload the displayed page or the active frame to be
sure that it's real, and not something old from the cache.

**********************************************************

For those of you who are interested, here's the full story.
It's certainly not of interest to everybody, but maybe the
developers might get some useful hint out of this.

It seems that at first there's a huge time delay before
the links under "System" start to work. During that period
of time the pages seem to have been cached by my browser.
When I clicked on one the links now, I was presented with
a cached page.
But then, occasionally, non reproducably, the entries under
"Chart of Accounts..." showed up, and once I saw the HTML
templates loaded into the content frame.
Playing on this game, I then got logged out all the time,
for no obvious reason. It was in fact unintentional, that
I did a shift-reload, thus bypassing the cache with a fresh
page --- and there I wasn't logged out. But then I got
logged out, and saw the 500 error mentioned in the FAQ.
I then made the change, as described in the FAQ, a second
time. Half an hour before I had tried that, and the result
was just that I got the 500 error with the lines 80-82 in
SL/Form.pm commented, instead of vice versa.
Now, this time it worked. Now I could open the "Chart of
Accounts..." menu subtree as expected, and all the other
links under "System" including "HTML Templates..." worked well,
either, except one: "LaTeX Templates..."
But seven or eight minutes later, when I clicked it for
the 25th time, it worked, also!

I really don't know what's taken so long. But I think, it
might be a good idea, to add a hint into the documentation,
that (1) cacheing may hide the Apache 2 500 error and (2) that
it may take several minutes before the links of the "System"
menu subtree are fully functional, when they are clicked on
the first time.
Even better than expanding the docs, would be accelerating
the function initialisation!

Or am I really the first person to ever experience this problem?

I have installed SL three times, and I had this problem with
all installations. So it's reproducable, at least on my system.

Yours sincerely

        Alex Bär
