Sorry, just overlooked this part of your message.
Surely you checked the file ownerships, right? Should be something like
wwwrun.nogroup or maybe www.nobody (depending on distribution).
Probably not too helpful, I am afraid, but that's all I can think of
(being a newbie with just a week of experience, struggling to get SL
working correctly).
