[sotd] UC Atlas of Global Inequality [September 12, 2006]

Site of the Day for Tuesday, September 12, 2006

        UC Atlas of Global Inequality

Today's site, from the University of California Santa Cruz's Center for
Global and Regional Studies, offers a comprehensive worldwide statistical
survey on standards of living. Gentle Subscribers will find an excellent
resource for information on the controversial topics of poverty and
globalization.

"Global inequality has grown dramatically over the last 300 years. At the
end of the Twentieth Century global income inequality was greater than ever
before. There is debate amongst academics, between street protestors and
global institutions, and elsewhere, about whether inequality is rising or
falling. This Atlas seeks to shed light on that debate and to broaden
discussion to include aspects of inequality beyond income measures and
beyond aggregated national statistics. ... All materials can be reproduced
without charge if they are attributed." - from the website

The site features global data on Health, Gender, Income Inequality,
Connectiveness, Inequality and Growth, and Economic Crises, with maps
displaying changes over time on a number of these issues. One of the most
interesting sections in Health is the graph showing the surprising results
of per capita health care spending to life expectancy by country.

In addition to the "Atlas" itself, the presentation includes a blog devoted
to publications germane to the issue of global inequality. A number of
these cited works are available online. A glossary of terms and an
extensive bibliography are provided, along with a useful "How to Use this
Site" section.
