Site of the Day for Wednesday, March 22, 2006 Sun-Earth Day Normally celebrated on the Vernal Equinox, this year's Sun-Earth Day has been moved forward to coincide with a major astronomical event -- a total solar eclipse on March 29. Today's site from NASA offers all the hoopla as well as all the facts on this significant occurrence. "Each year the Sun-Earth Day program wraps a fresh new thematic approach around NASA's Sun-Earth Connection science, missions and cutting edge research. ... This year's theme, Eclipse: In a Different Light, shows how eclipses have inspired people to observe and understand the Sun-Earth-Moon system. Join us in an extraordinary journey of exploration, discovery and understanding as we prepare for a total solar eclipse ..." - from the website From the "Eclipse: In a Different Light" link on the opening page, the site provides a wealth of scientific information on eclipses geared to the layperson. "Technology Through Time" focuses on the historical development of solar physics, with a "Great Moments in the History of Solar Physics" section and an annotated timeline. Some of the topics covered in the "Issues" section include solar spectroscopy, early corona descriptions and the work of astronomers of ancient Babylon and Greece. An article on Einstein, with helpful diagrams, demonstrates how the 1919 eclipse supported his General Theory of Relativity. In the "Mr. Eclipse" section, the path of totality, beginning in Brazil and concluding in western Mongolia is highlighted. An interactive map of the path created in conjunction with Google is also available. The "Eclipse Facts" and FAQ provide additional information while the gallery of images offers some striking photos.
