Site of the Day for Monday, September 6, 2004

        Wikipedia

Today's site is that lofty enterprise "Wikipedia", an ambitious project to
create an open-concept encyclopedia, with free access for Web users around
the world. Gentle Subscribers who may have overlooked this idealistic
undertaking may be heartened by its ongoing development, which is
approaching one million articles in all languages.

"Welcome to Wikipedia! We are building an open-content encyclopedia in many
languages. In the English version, started in January 2001, we are now
working on 340957 articles... Wikipedia is a project to produce a new kind
of encyclopedia that is comprehensive and free. ... Who is responsible for
the articles on Wikipedia? This is a collaborative endeavor. Thousands of
people have contributed to different parts of this project, and anyone can
do so, including you." - from the website

The main page of the site offers a daily featured article, a sidebar of
current news stories, selected historical anniversaries and a "Did You
Know?" section, highlighting Wikipedia's latest articles. Since this is an
encyclopedia, the search function, to the left, scoures Wikipedia's entries
for relevant information. Within the articles, additional references are
hot-linked to related material. While the accuracy and depth of the entries
may be uneven, Wikipedia, nevertheless, is a valuable resource.
