Site of the Day for Friday, September 3, 2004

        Google News Alerts (Beta)

Today's web page, from the folks at Google, offers a convenient way to stay
up-to-date on newsworthy topics. Gentle Subscribers, who may have been
caught flat-footed, on occasion, about a subject which is dear to their
hearts, like competitive origami, might consider the possibilities of being
notified when the topic hits the news in future.

"Google News Alerts are sent by email when news articles appear online that
match the topics you specify. ... Some handy uses of Google News Alerts
include: monitoring a developing news story; keeping current on a
competitor or industry; getting the latest on a celebrity or event; keeping
tabs on your favorite sports teams ... [and] updates on the activities of
lemurs." - from the website

The web page provides the News Alerts form in which users provide an e-mail
address, identify their topic of interest and specify the frequency of the
notifications, either "as it happens" or "once a day". The latter results
in a single e-mail per day, if the topic has appeared in the news, while
the former may trigger a number of alerts in a single day, if it is
receiving a lot of reportage. The e-mail alert includes the first few lines
of the article and a link to its source. Additional information about the
service may be found in the FAQ, which answers a range of typical user
queries.
