"Google News Alerts are sent by email when news articles appear online that match the topics you specify. ... Some handy uses of Google News Alerts include: monitoring a developing news story; keeping current on a competitor or industry; getting the latest on a celebrity or event; keeping tabs on your favorite sports teams ... [and] updates on the activities of lemurs." - from the website The web page provides the News Alerts form in which users provide an e-mail address, identify their topic of interest and specify the frequency of the notifications, either "as it happens" or "once a day". The latter results in a single e-mail per day, if the topic has appeared in the news, while the former may trigger a number of alerts in a single day, if it is receiving a lot of reportage. The e-mail alert includes the first few lines of the article and a link to its source. Additional information about the service may be found in the FAQ, which answers a range of typical user queries.
