        Severe Winds

Today's site, from the New Hampshire office of Emergency Management, offers
an extremely interesting overview of a number of climatic events involving
high winds. Gentle Subscribers who have been following the active hurricane
season in the Atlantic will discover a range of eye-opening information at
the site.

"The name 'hurricane' is derived from the aboriginal Caribes=92 (indigenous
peoples of the West Indies at the time of the arrival of Christopher
Columbus) expression for 'evil spirit'." - from the website

The site provides a handy reference for various measuring scales, including
the Saffir-Simpson Scale for hurricanes, the Fujita Scale for tornadoes and
the Dolan-Davis Scale which rates "Nor=92easters". In addition to material
on hurricanes and tornadoes, a section devoted to lightening presents facts
and some surprising safety advice.

Wheel over to the site for an excellent information guide on various
extreme weather conditions at:
