Site of the Day for Tuesday, September 14, 2004 50 Tracks -- 100 years. One great list of essential songs of the 20th century. This summer Canada's public radio hosted a 10 week series to determine the best 50 popular songs of the twentieth century. Today's site unveils the results of that summer-long venture, which was broadcast during a 6 hour marathon on Labour Day by host Jian Ghomeshi. "Thousands of songs are released each year by thousands of artists in an ever expanding array of genres ... it's been happening for decades and it's getting harder and harder to figure out what should be in your collection! How is a music lover, casual or devoted, to have any chance of knowing what to buy? What's good? What's going to last? How can a person find the music that matters?" - from the website The list was compiled from listeners' suggestions and a panel of experts, on the most important and essential sings, decade by decade, until a final 50 were reached. Discover who made the cut and who didn't and what song emerged as number one. There's also an informative timeline stretching from 1877, charting music recording devices and formats from the early phonograph's tin foil cylinder to the "I-Pod". Although some websites hang around seemingly forever, some vanish overnight. The List suggests making a hard copy of the 50 Best Tracks, a fun list in any multi-generation gathering for a spirited discussion on what should be included -- Madonna's "Material Girl", Guy Lombardo's "Auld Lang Syne"?
