Site of the Day, for Thursday, January 17, 2008 Race - Are We So Different? Today's site, from the American Anthropological Association in conjunction with the Science Museum of Minnesota, offers an online version of an American travelling exhibit on race. Gentle Subscribers will discover an excellent presentation on a topic which remains a challenging issue. "Looking through the eyes of history, science and lived experience, the RACE Project explains differences among people and reveals the reality and unreality of race. The story of race is complex and may challenge how we think about race and human variation, about the differences and similarities among people." - from the website The site explores the topic of race from a number of perspectives, including history, human variation and "lived experience", using a flash presentation. Through an interactive historical timeline which stretches from early colonial days in America to the twenty-first century, the exhibit zeros in on topics ranging from the Irish potato famine to the questionable science of the 1890's - 1930's -- eugenics and physical anthropology. The research on human variation highlights the discoveries about human biology, genetics and patterns of genetic variation. Additional material is provided on individual experiences about race across the globe, standards of beauty, along with a sports quiz on facts and stereotypes.
