NFB -- Blackfly In honor of Canada Day, today's site, from one of the country's most enduring institutions, the National Film Board of Canada, presents the short animated 1991 film, "Black Fly". Gentle Subscribers, of all nationalities, may be amused and entertained by this production of the classic Canadian folksong. "Blackfly is a breakneck romp based on the song of the same title, written and sung by Canadian folk singer Wade Hemsworth, with back-up vocals by Kate and Anna McGarrigle. This animated film recounts Hemsworth's battles with this quintessential 'critter' during a summer of surveying in Northern Ontario." - from the website Directed by Christopher Hinton, this five minute film recounts the trials of the songwriter as he spent a summer with a work crew, in the area of the Little Abitibi River, just south of Hudson's Bay. The song, written in 1949, went on to become a rueful anthem to the trials of experiencing life close to nature in some areas of the Canadian wilderness. The film is offered in QuickTime format.
