Site of the Day, for Thursday, January 31, 2008 MediaMonkey 3.0.1 - Software of the Month A long term favorite of the music crowd, MediaMonkey is one of the most thorough and feature-rich audio programs -- an organizer, player, burner and all-round one-stop application available for the Windows platform. More a gorilla than a monkey, this program from Ventis Media, which does have a shareware version -- the Gold Edition -- nevertheless performs a host of functions within its freeware, skinable framework. Those inspecting the application for the first time with monitors using a 1280 x 1024 or greater display, may want to have a quick reccy under the hood [Tools / Options / Library / Skins] to up the font size. Requiring less than 30MB of space for its installation, its size is a mere bagatelle compared to the heavy hitting Windows Media Player 11, which many folks prefer to get along without. MediaMonkey initially does a fast search of the hard drive, noting all audio files and then prepares a database, the audio Library, with every item displayed under almost every conceivable sort criterion -- title, artist, album, composer, genre, location, year and even rating. Any changes in the location of audio files on the hard drive are automatically updated within the program. Its many capabilities include copying (ripping) CD's to the computer's hard drive with an ease that will leave even novices feeling on top of their game, as well as being able to burn audio CD's and MP3's to CD and DVD. The program can create playlists, edit ID tags, handle album art and a convenient number of audio formats. MediaMonkey will even deal with conversion tasks for WAV, OGG, MP3, WMA and FLAC formats. There are a number of quiet touches which bespeak the refinements carried out on the program over the years, like the Play/Sleep function which will turn the computer off at a specified time or the gentle notification of the name of each new track as it begins. One of MediaMonkey's outstanding features is its support for a number of popular MP3 players. This software makes syncing a player with specified files a breeze, while constructing playlists and exporting them to a player via the MTP mode works without a hitch. This can make organizing files on MP3 players, which often have abysmal software, a no-hassle exercise. With its ability to manage audio libraries of more that 50,000 titles, burning and conversion functionality and support for MP3 players, MediaMonkey is a strong contender as a one-stop audio application for anyone looking for an easy to use yet comprehensive program.
