Operational Rations: Meal, Ready to Eat (MREs)
From the "an army marches on its stomach" category, comes a factual little
website from the folks at the Defense Logistics Agency on those now famous
MREs for American military forces in the field. Gentle Members who have
idly wondered exactly what constitutes a "Meal, Ready to Eat", for
operational troops, when the chow wagon is not at hand, will find the
answer at this site.
"The Meal, Ready-To-Eat (MRE) is designed to sustain an individual engaged
in heavy activity such as military training or during actual military
operations when normal food service facilities are not available. The MRE
is a totally self-contained operational ration consisting of a full meal
packed in a flexible meal bag." - from the website
The site offers information about product shelf life, reassurance about its
consumption unheated, various methods of heating the product and the
gastronomic delights of the assorted varieties in the form of available
menus. The "Kosher/Halal" link on the left offers the best images of one of
the meals in a see-through bag. Unfortunately, there are no evaluations
from the end consumers.
