La Grotte Chauvet-Pont d'Arc Cave
Today's site offers an outstanding presentation from the French Ministry of
Culture and Communication on the amazing Cave in Ardeche (accent omitted)
France. Gentle Subscribers will encounter riveting details of this spectacular
archeological find of prehistoric art dating from 36,000 years ago since its
discovery in 1994.
"Explore the Cave ... Knowledge gained by the scientific team ... since its
discovery in 1994" - from the website
Since concerns about preserving the Chauvet Cave led to its being closed to
visitors since its discovery, efforts have been made to reveal its dramatic
artwork to the world. This presentation is one of those projects with details
about the art, a virtual tour, and close-ups of the works themselves.
Information and a map about the Ardeche Valley are available along with notes
on the scientific research being done and the conservation measures taken to
protect the site. In addition, details on the replica constructed to give
visitors as close an experience as possible to the ambiance of the actual Cave
are included. The presentation is easily navigated through the menu (the usual
three short lines on the left sidebar) or by simply following the downward
arrow.
